Encourage youth to take a break from their busy schedules with short mindfulness exercises. These could include guided breathing sessions, body scans, or quick gratitude reflections. Regular mindfulness practice can help reduce stress and improve overall well-being.

Five points for incorporating mindful moments into a youth’s daily routine:
  1. Set Aside Dedicated Time
Encourage youth to carve out a few minutes each day for mindfulness practice. This could be in the morning before starting their day, during a break between classes, or in the evening before bed. Consistency is key to experiencing the benefits of mindfulness.
  2. Focus on the Breath
Teach youth the basics of mindfulness by guiding them to focus on their breath. Encourage them to close their eyes and take slow, deep breaths, noticing the sensation of air entering and leaving their body. Remind them that it’s natural for the mind to wander, and gently guide their attention back to the breath whenever it does.
  3. Body Scan Meditation
Introduce youth to body scan meditation, where they systematically bring their awareness to each part of their body, starting from the top of the head and moving down to the toes. Encourage them to notice any sensations, tension, or areas of relaxation as they scan through each body part. This practice promotes relaxation and body awareness.
  4. Gratitude Reflection
Incorporate gratitude into mindful moments by inviting youth to reflect on things they’re thankful for. This could be done as part of a mindfulness exercise or as a standalone practice. Encourage them to think about specific people, experiences, or aspects of their life that bring them joy or comfort, fostering a positive mindset.
  5. Non-Judgmental Awareness
Teach youth the concept of non-judgmental awareness, where they observe their thoughts, emotions, and sensations without attaching judgment or criticism. Remind them that it’s okay to experience a range of feelings, and mindfulness can help them cultivate a sense of acceptance and compassion towards themselves and others.

Daily life can sometimes feel overwhelming and hard to look ahead, so we hope that by helping create this space for you as an individual or for you a youth in your family-  creates a bit more positive and calm space in a world that feel so busy.
